You can write blog post after blog post after blog post and still hear crickets. Unless you tell someone you’ve written something they should read, you’re unlikely to get eyes on your work.
Write, publish and distribute.
Seth Godin says, “If it doesn’t ship, it doesn’t count.” You have to put it out into the world. When it comes to your website, clicking publish isn’t enough. You have to share your work, amplify it, and let others know it’s there.
The internet is a crowded space and we’re all competing for attention. Distribution, then, becomes a strategy in itself, one which seeks to twine multiple forms of sharing into one cooperative strand to amplify your post, words and ideas.
Putting your research and thoughts into the world can be daunting.
Whether you’re shy or dealing with imposter syndrome, to make change in the world, you must first allow yourself to be seen. Distributing your work is necessary to share the ideas that spark conversations and make a difference.
Here are five suggestions to include in your distribution strategy:
- Newsletter or RSS feed: ask your audience to sign up to a mailing list to receive updates delivered directly.
- Social media: participate on the social platforms that your audience uses to share your ideas and links.
- Your network: reach out to collaborators asking them to share your latest work.
- Content platforms: Pitch your articles and papers to magazines, industry sites or content platforms such as medium to use their distribution network.
- Make it multimedia: Record your written article as audio or video, or translate it into pictures to share your work in new ways.
Gurus like Gary Vaynerchuk work with teams to create over 30 pieces of content from one blog post. Our own past podcast guest, Ross Simmonds, has shared his tips for distribution for successful amplification.
Distribution is taking quality work and distributing it in quantity.
There are many ways to create content, as our own content machine series has demonstrated. Developing a distribution strategy will ensure the content you create works for you, gets to your audience and potential readers, and helps spark the change you hope to see with your GradBlog.
